General Info

Tucked along the charming stretch of Hive Coffee Shop, this cozy coffee shop quickly feels like a local favorite the moment you step inside. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, with a warm, welcoming vibe that makes it easy to settle in, whether you’re catching up with friends or just taking a quiet break.

What stands out right away is how thoughtfully curated the menu is. It’s simple, but everything feels intentional. The Flat White is smooth and balanced, with a rich espresso base that pairs perfectly with silky milk. If you’re more in the mood for something comforting, the Hot Chocolate delivers a creamy, indulgent experience without being overly sweet. Both drinks are ideal companions whether you’re working remotely using the shop’s reliable Wi-Fi or just enjoying a slow morning.

Food-wise, the selection leans toward satisfying, casual bites. The Bagel options are fresh and filling, making them a solid go-to for a light lunch. However, the Breakfast BAP in a Baguette is where things really shine. It’s hearty, flavorful, and perfect if you’re starting your day or need something substantial to keep you going. And if you have a sweet tooth, the Coffee Cake is a must-try-soft, moist, and just the right level of sweetness to complement your drink.

Another thing that makes this spot appealing is how inclusive the offerings are. Vegetarian options are available, which adds flexibility to the menu without complicating it. The setup is straightforward too-debit cards are accepted, and the service is quick and friendly, keeping everything stress-free.

From a reviewer’s perspective, the overall experience feels genuine. It’s not trying too hard to be trendy or overly polished. Instead, it focuses on doing the basics well-good coffee, comforting food, and a cozy environment. The location on High Street makes it convenient, and it’s easy to see why reviews often highlight its laid-back charm.

If you’re exploring coffee shops in Hemel Hempstead, this one offers a balanced mix of quality drinks, satisfying bites, and a relaxed setting that encourages you to stay just a little longer than planned.

What customers say?

“ Possibly a 3.5* if I could however happy to give 4* regardless as would much rather support a local business than have them replaced bt a chain (and this is much better)! Coffee is OK, good even, but far from amazing. It's great that they use locally roasted beans, but just feels like they haven't quite got their brewing/extraction down. Service was really good and they brought the coffee to our table with a friendly face. There was also a gentlemen in a mobility scooter who came and they brough the coffee out to him as he wasn't able to enter the shop due to a step (I read it's not possible to install a ramp as it's a listed building). The shop itself is lovely with lots of plants about and the lights shines through the window in the afternoon where we were sat. ”

“ Growing up in Hemel, and going to many cafes over the years, Hive is possibly the most welcoming cafe in Hemel. It’s got gorgeous food with the most loveliest people working there. ”

- Madison Head -

“ Best cafe in town, the food is consistently excellent, coffee and smoothies and tea all delicious and the cakes are unreal. I find myself going most weekends and every time I have visitors from out of town due to the excellent food, brilliant service and great atmosphere. Also incredibly dog friendly if that is important to you. ”

“ Based on the Americano coffee I got it was was of good quality! You can always tell how good a baristas coffee is by trying a black coffee! Very smooth full bodied roast! Overall better then your chain spots. There was selection of cakes and savoury food available also. Always try supporting local businesses and £3 for the coffee it’s very competitive! ”

“ Cute dog friendly cafe nestled away in Old Hemel. Food, coffee, matcha, teas, and staff are all amazing. Girlfriend and I come here weekly for breakfast and to relax a little and do some dog spotting in the morning. ”

“ Lovely place for brunch, food was tasty, they had a good selection. My wife loved all the house plants on display, the location is very clean and picturesque. ”

“ Hive Coffee Shop is one of those places that immediately feels right the moment you step in. I love the atmosphere here — calm, bright, and welcoming, with just enough character to make you want to stay longer than you planned. The coffee is consistently excellent, smooth and properly made, and the hot chocolate is easily one of the best in Hemel, especially with the marshmallows piled on top. Everything tastes fresh, and you can tell they actually care about what they serve. The pastries and small bites are simple but very good, perfect for a quick stop or a relaxed break. Service is friendly in a genuine way, not forced, and they always move things along efficiently even when it gets busy. It’s become one of my favourite spots in Old Town — a place where you can sit by the window, enjoy a proper drink, and just slow down for a moment. A great local coffee shop that I keep coming back to. ”
